Located on One Campus Drive in Allendale, Michigan, this new educational facility is located on the main campus of Grand Valley State University. At $40 million to construct, this facility houses 300,000 square feet of modern science equipment, sophisticated instruments, and extensive map and specimen collections, and is a well-equipped laboratory facility for study, research, and experimentation in the natural sciences. The Associate Builders and Contractors award-winning building was designed by Design Plus and Pioneer Construction began construction of this "fast-track" project in October 1993 and coordinated the efforts of 35 subcontractors and over 300 construction workers to complete the project in only 26 months. The Laboratory/Classroom section had to be built around the old Science Building to allow continued use of its labs until the new lab space was ready to be occupied. The project also included the construction of the 117 foot tall Carillon Tower.
The Copper roofs and glass atriums of the Life Science complex gives the building a character of its own. The site work encompasses 16 acres of land in which fountains, foot bridges, sculptures, and hundreds of trees and plantings create an ideal landscape for relaxing or studying between classes. Thousands of brick pavers were used to construct pathways to and from the building. |
